When Hooks uses the term talking back, she is talking about, "speaking as an equal to an authority figuer. It meant daring to disagree, and sometimes it just meant having an opinion." Another way she talks back is by contructing a persona to present her writingwith. According to Hooks, she had just, "talked back to a grown person." She was talking back because she was being outspoken, and not afraid to talk back.
Gates talks back in his memoir when he talks about he is mad at his bretheren for being ashamed of being black. This is an act of talking back because he made it public that he was mad at the black man. He let the public know. Also, he talks back when he is presenting his memoir to white people. It's already known that, throughout history, black people have felt oppressed by white people. By Gates speaking about his experiences as a black man, and his culture to a white man without censorship, he is talking back.
